The G20 Ministerial Conference on Women Empowerment commences in Gandhinagar !

Chennai-03.08.2023-Under India’s G20 Presidency, the Ministerial Conference on Women Empowerment is being convened from August 02 – 03 in the capital of Gujarat, Gandhinagar. The three-day meeting is being chaired by the Minister of Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani. More than 150 delegates from G20 members as well as invited countries and international organizations are participating in the ministerial conference. Along with this, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Dr. Mahendra Munjpara, and India's G20 Chief Co-ordinator, Harsh Vardhan Shringla attended the inaugural session. 

The 3-day Ministerial Conference began with a special video message by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing the delegates, Prime Minister said, “When women prosper, the world prospers.” “Their economic empowerment drives development and their access to education drives global progress.” He added, “Her leadership promotes inclusivity and her voice inspires positive change.” “The most effective way of empowering women is through a women-centric development approach and India is making strides in this direction.” He shared, “Women entrepreneurs are significant contributors to the global economy.” While concluding his address, the Prime Minister appreciated the progress made by the G20EMPOWER and accelerating women’s growth and women-led development across all G20 nations. He also expressed happiness over the launch of a 'Tech-Equity Platform' to enhance digital and financial literacy for women.

The Minister for Women and Child Development, Smriti Z Irani gave the opening remarks at the inaugural session of the meeting. During her address, she emphasized ensuring sustainable and inclusive economic growth through women-led development. She also expressed the hope that women-led development will be central to all action-oriented commitments of the ministerial meeting.

This conference will provide an opportunity towards achieving women's empowerment, gender equality, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on women-led development. The three-day conference will have focussed deliberations on the priority areas:  Education, a transformative path for women empowerment; women entrepreneurship, Equality, and a win-win situation for the economy; Creating partnerships to promote women's leadership at all levels, Women and girls as change-makers in climate resilience action and digital skills for Women empowerment.

Further, an exhibition focusing on 'India @ 75: Craft, Nutrition, Food, Health, STEM, Education, Skills, Business and Contribution of Women to the Economy' was also organized by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.

On the sidelines of the meeting, there will be events showcasing India's rich cultural heritage including programs by 'The Shillong Chamber Choir', and 'Drums of India'. Along with this, a performance by the children of Bal Bhavan will also take place on the last day of the meeting. Apart from this, local cuisine and Srianna (Millets) will be served to the delegates.
