India Highlights Support to Sri Lanka at UNHRC and Stresses on Fulfilling the Aspirations of Tamils !

13th September, Chennai: The 54th session of the Human Rights Council began in Geneva on 11th September and will continue until 13th October. During this period of five weeks, the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, Belarus, Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Sudan and other countries will be discussed. India's statement came during the interactive dialogue on the OHCHR report on the topic "Promoting Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights in Sri Lanka" at the 54th session of the Human Rights Council.

India said that it has paid attention to the report of the Deputy High Commissioner. India is always with Sri Lanka as a close neighbour and friend. Sri Lanka's relief efforts have been continuously supported, with multi-dimensional support, including rehabilitation, resettlement and reconstruction processes in Sri Lanka. More than $4 billion has been provided to Sri Lanka in the past one year to address its economic challenges. 

In July, the two countries also issues. Vision Statement on Connectivity which, inter alia, highlighted the significance of a strong India-Sri Lanka economic partnership for inclusive & sustainable growth in all regions and for all the people of Sri Lanka and for promoting reconciliation in the country.

India has always been guided by two fundamental principles, first, to support the aspirations of Tamils for equality, justice, dignity and peace, and second, unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sri Lanka. The Indian delegation hoped that the Government of Sri Lanka would fulfil the aspirations of the Tamils and its commitment for equality, justice and peace.
