VGP MARINE KINGDOM CREATES HISTORY WITH INDIA'S FIRST RELEASE OF CAPTIVE-BRED BANDED BAMBOO SHARKS INTO THE SEA !
*Chennai, 06th June, 2026* : In a landmark moment for marine conservation in India, VGP Marine Kingdom today successfully released captive-bred Banded Bamboo Sharks into the sea, marking a pioneering achievement in the country's efforts towards sustainable marine biodiversity conservation and responsible aquaculture.
The historic release was carried out in the presence of Thiru A. Srinath, Honourable Minister for Fisheries, Government of Tamil Nadu, along with marine biologists, conservation experts, government officials, students, media, influencers and more guests.
The sharks released today were born and raised entirely under the expert care of VGP Marine Kingdom's marine life specialists. Their successful breeding and subsequent release demonstrate the immense potential of scientific aquarium management, conservation-focused breeding programmes, and collaborative efforts to protect marine ecosystems.
Earlier this year, VGP Marine Kingdom had announced the successful captive breeding of Banded Bamboo Sharks, an achievement that drew attention from marine conservationists across the country. Today's release represents the culmination of that journey and signifies a major step towards strengthening marine biodiversity and promoting sustainable conservation practices.
Speaking on the occasion, Thiru A. Srinath, Honorable Minister for Fisheries, Government of Tamil Nadu, commended the initiative and highlighted the importance of creating greater awareness about marine conservation among future generations. He noted that responsible conservation efforts, supported by scientific research and public participation, play a vital role in safeguarding India's rich marine heritage.
Mr. VG Santhosam, Chairman, VGP Groups, said, “As the senior-most member of the VGP family, I am delighted to see VGP Marine Kingdom take up this remarkable project for the public and for the cause of marine conservation. I extend my blessings and guidance to the entire team as they continue to create initiatives that serve society, educate young minds, and protect our oceans for future generations.”
Mr. VGP Ravidas, Managing Director, VGP Marine Kingdom, said, “The release of captive-bred Banded Bamboo Sharks into the sea marks a defining moment not only for VGP Marine Kingdom but for marine conservation efforts in India. This achievement demonstrates that private institutions can play a meaningful role in biodiversity conservation through scientific innovation, responsible stewardship, and sustained commitment. We are proud to contribute to a future where conservation, education, and public awareness go hand in hand. Today’s milestone reflects our larger vision of creating institutions that leave a positive impact on society and the environment.”
Mr. VGPR Premdas, Director, VGP Marine Kingdom, said, “VGP Marine Kingdom has always been much more than an aquarium; it has been a dream to create a world-class marine destination that inspires people to appreciate, understand, and protect our oceans. Seeing captive-bred Banded Bamboo Sharks return to the sea is an emotional and proud moment for all of us. This project was envisioned as a platform for marine education, conservation, and scientific learning, and today’s achievement validates that vision. We hope this initiative encourages greater collaboration between conservationists, researchers, institutions, and the public to safeguard marine ecosystems for generations to come.”
The Banded Bamboo Shark is a bottom-dwelling species known for its distinctive striped pattern during its juvenile stage and plays an important role in maintaining ecological balance within marine habitats. Successful captive breeding and release programmes contribute to enhancing scientific understanding of marine species while supporting broader conservation objectives.
VGP Marine Kingdom has consistently undertaken initiatives aimed at marine education, species conservation, and public awareness, positioning itself as one of India's leading marine conservation and experiential learning centres. Conceived and nurtured under the vision of Mr. VGPR Premdas, the facility was established not merely as an entertainment destination but as a platform for conservation, education, and scientific engagement with marine life. The event concluded with a renewed call for collective action towards protecting marine ecosystems and ensuring a sustainable future for ocean life.
